About this event

The approach taken will focus on how to embed changes which encompass:

1. Tools and systems that support people to work in partnership and to have the right information and support at the right time for the best decision.

2. Clinician skills and values: using core and more advanced communication skills to enable people to articulate what matters to them and work out the impact of these in health options, decisions and plans.

The training is delivered in 2 parts, please choose a date for part 1 and a date for part 2.

During this training we will:

• Consider the philosophy, benefits and components of SDM

• Work out what the key SDM ‘moments’ are in your service

• Make plans to put in place practical changes to how things are done to embed SDM into your pathways and patient journeys

• See, practice and reflect upon the consultation skills involved in SDM

Part 1 – What do we mean by Shared Decision Making?

Part 2 – The Shared Decision Making Consultation

To introduce the whole team to the rationale for SDM and clarify current ideas and understanding.
To explore the overall principles that underpin SDM and think about the process of making a decision and how we support meaningful involvement in decision making.
To think about how we discuss risk in a meaningful way
To consider current patient pathways and which decision making areas you wish to focus on as an individual or team.

To reflect upon the philosophy and values that underpin a SDM approach.
To consider the consultations skills involved in SDM and have a go at scenarios using the skills outlined.
To continue to work with your team on SDM in the patient pathway/journey and an initial improvement that you will work on.
To give teams time to do some thinking about pathways, resources and planning.
