How many sessions must I be working to qualify?
There is not a minimum number of sessions.
Can I be a Locum and be part of the Fellowship?
No, you need a substantive job. You can have a part time substantive job and a part time locum job and be part of the fellowship, but you cannot be part of the fellowship if you only have a locum job.
Who finds a mentor?
Your local Training Hub will find a mentor for fellows.
What happens if I go on prolonged sick/maternity leave?
All fellows are expected to sign the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This includes the need to self-declare for time off and pause funding for significant periods of absence.
What are the monthly peer support sessions?
These are run by the NEL Fellowship Scheme Programme Director Dr Munir Ali-Zubair. The purpose of these sessions is to:
1. bring you up to speed with topics that may be of relevant to recently-qualified GPs,
2. help you calibrate in terms of what to expect at work,
3. encourage you to share your ICE (yep, bet you still remember what that stands for) with each other,
4. discuss your Fellowship and SPIN projects,
5. sign-post for support when needed,
6. allow you to feel part of a team (like when you were VTS)
7. make sure you’re getting all the financial/practical/pastoral support that you are entitled to
8. hear from you about what is important to you, because we have ways of escalating things
Can interested practices add this as an available opportunity for potential candidates on a job advert?
Practices are encouraged to include this to their job advertisements as this will show potential candidates that there is support for them in General Practice to smooth the transition into their new career. It will also encourage newly qualified nurses who may not normally consider General Practice as a first destination career choice to take up a position in primary care as they will receive the necessary support to enable them to rapidly gain the necessary skills to become a fully-fledged practice nurse.
What can PCNs do?
One vision of the Fellowship scheme might be for fellows to work across their PCN in a portfolio manner, so that they do sessions in more than just one Practice, thus adding variety to their working week and this aids long term retention. Example: 5 GP sessions in Practice A, specialist diabetes clinic in Practice B, etc.
